Join Optinum for a live conversation with academics from CUT as they share how they use MATLAB in teaching and research. Hear real experiences, discover useful resources and learn how your institution can get more from MATLAB.
Join Optinum for a live, podcast-style conversation with two academics from the Central University of Technology (CUT), as they share their firsthand experiences of using MATLAB in teaching, student projects and research.
We'll chat about how MATLAB is being used across different disciplines, the value it brings to students and lecturers, and the role that training and technical support play in getting the most out of the tools. We'll also explore the MATLAB resources and licensing options available to universities and colleges, whether you're considering MATLAB for the first time or looking to make better use of an existing Campus-Wide License.
Expect an informal, practical discussion with real examples, useful insights and an opportunity to ask questions.
Adri holds a BSc (Hons) in Ecology and Conservation and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, both from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).
Her passion for science, technology and education led her to Optinum, where she began collaborating with academics and researchers to integrate computational software into teaching and research.
Today, Adri works closely with STEM enthusiasts, educators and researchers at higher education and research institutions to enhance STEM curricula, improve learning experiences, and increase research quality and output.
Together with the Optinum team, she helps institutions access high-quality computational software, develop programming skills and build strong relationships across the Southern African academic and research community.

Prof. Rangith Baby Kuriakose is an academic and NRF C-rated researcher at the Central University of Technology (CUT), where he leads the Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics research cluster.
With over 16 years of experience, he specialises in Smart Manufacturing, Digital Twins, industrial automation and Industry 4.0 technologies. He actively uses MATLAB and Simulink in teaching and research, including developing Digital Twin models for industrial applications.
He is a recipient of the 2024 CUT Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award for Research and Innovation and currently leads CUT’s AI and Digital Twins activities within the €1.74 million European AVIAT-STEM project.

Dr Michelle Ellis is an academic at the Central University of Technology (CUT), where she has been teaching since 1995. She holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of the Free State and served as Head of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences from 2023 to 2025.
With over 30 years of experience at CUT, she is passionate about making mathematics more practical and relevant to engineering students. She has introduced MATLAB Live Scripts into Engineering Mathematics, helping students connect mathematical theory with real-world engineering applications through interactive learning.
